Cirrochroa surya is an uncommon species found only in a limited part of the region. Little research appears to have been done and so little is known about this species. We do know it is multivoltine but it is not known how many broods per year, although there are probably at least 3 or 4.

Taxonomy:  Animalia - Arthropoda - Insecta - Lepidoptera - Nymphalidae - Heliconiinae - Cirrochroa - surya

Regional subspecies:    Cirrochroa surya siamensis (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, S.Vietnam, W.Malaysia), Cirrochroa surya surya (Myanmar)

Regional Distribution:  Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia

Habitat:  Cirrochroa surya is found in open montane forests at low to moderate elevations. It has been recorded up to around 1000m a.s.l.

Flight time:  not fully known but probably most of the year            Wingspan:  50-60mm

Life History:  not known but possibly similar to its sister species with egg to adult at around 18-20 days

Larval Hosts:  Hydnocarpus castaneus (Achariaceae).  There are certainly other hosts that have not yet been recorded.

Adult Food Sources:  Nectar - not known if this species visits flowers for nectarOther - mud puddling.
